The closed “point of dispensing” (POD) clinic is to provide first doses of the Moderna vaccine by appointment only. Those who are eligible under phases 1a, 1b and 1c can sign up by calling 434-432-3582. All you have to do is leave a message with your full name and phone number and someone will call you back to schedule your appointment. The phone line is for messages only and is open 24/7. If someone gets a busy signal they should call back later.  

“We are excited to be working with the local health department and countless community partners to offer vaccines for our county residents at the Gretna Community Vaccination Clinic,” said Pittsylvania County Administrator David Smitherman. “We are doing everything in our power to ensure that residents in every corner of our community have access to the COVID-19 vaccine.”  

The County was able to lease the former Gretna Foodland building from FBGT, LLC for $30,000. The facility’s representative Tim Clark said, “We are ecstatic that the old grocery store was available and met the needs for the County’s clinic. Its location provides a great opportunity for citizens in Northern Pittsylvania County to conveniently access the vaccine.””.  The City of Danville secured its Danville Mall vaccination clinic from the Hull Property Group at no cost. 

The Gretna Community Vaccination Clinic will be using an independent registration and scheduling process, separate from the state’s registration portals at vaccinate.virginia.gov and 1-877-VAX-IN-VA. This Gretna registration process will not change any registration records created through the state’s portal; the records will remain. No action is needed for those who previously registered through the state’s portal; they are able to be vaccinated in Gretna.  

For the Gretna Community Vaccination Clinic, Pittsylvania County, the City of Danville, and the Pittsylvania-Danville Health District are working in concert with many community partners to ensure that those in the community who are most susceptible to the serious effects of COVID-19 receive these vaccines. Anyone who falls under phase 1c eligibility requirements can call 434-432-3582 to sign up. Pre-registration is required to receive a vaccine at this clinic.

Spillmann, M.D., M.P.H., director of the Pittsylvania-Danville and Southside Health Districts. “These vaccines are available completely free of charge to the recipient, and they have been proven to be safe and effective in preventing serious illness, hospitalization and death. Looking forward, we will continue to adjust vaccine planning and availability based upon supply, demand, eligibility, phases and the unique needs in our communities. This week, we’re pleased to bring this opportunity to a location in Gretna.”

“Our region’s coalition of clinic volunteers are happy to band together again to serve our neighbors in Pittsylvania County,” said Billy Wooten, Executive Director of the Center for Community Engagement & Career Competitiveness at Averett University, a community organizer working hard to ensure that everyone knows about the vaccine and has the opportunity to receive it. “Our volunteers have a proven track record of running efficient vaccination clinics, and we have already begun contacting eligible people who are in Phase 1 A-C. We are hearing very positive feedback from these calls, and our local county community organizers are energized about helping mitigate the effects of this terrible pandemic.”

• The Gretna  Town Hall (107 Shelton St, Gretna, VA 24557) 
• Hurt Town Hall (533 Pocket Road, Hurt, VA 24563) 

The Gretna Community Vaccination Clinic is located at 301 North Main Street, Gretna, VA 24557, which was formerly a Foodland grocery store. Pittsylvania County staff identified the facility as a possible clinic and signed a lease to secure the facility for several months. The building has been outfitted as an ADA-compliant vaccination clinic.   

The local health district remains in phase 1c of vaccine distribution, which means that all frontline and essential workers, those between the ages of 16 and 64 with certain medical conditions that may increase the risk of COVID-19, and those over the age of 65 are eligible to be vaccinated. 

These PODs are presented with cooperation and support from Sovah Health-Danville, the City of Danville Pittsylvania County, the Averett University and Danville Community College Schools of Nursing, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Pittsylvania-Danville Chamber of Commerce, Danville Regional Foundation and Medical Reserve Corps volunteers.
