DANVILLE, Va. – Danville School Superintendent Angela Hairston has submitted her proposed budget to the Danville City School Board.
The document requests no additional funding from city council but calls for salary increases for all employees and five additional instruction days in the school calendar.
The budget also requests after-school programs, enhancements for staff and increased wrap-around services. Staffing enhancements include more certified teachers to reduce class sizes to 14-18 students each; Literacy Specialists for elementary and middle schools; increased technology support for students; and increased funding for Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate programs at Galileo and George Washington High Schools.
Hairston is also asking that the school year be extended by five days to address the pandemic’s effects on classroom instruction.
The proposed budget includes additional social workers and guidance counselors and an average 3.5% pay raise for employees in 2022, subject to the Gov. Northam’s approval of the Conference Budget.
The proposal will be submitted to Danville City Council later this month.
