PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. – Supervisors in Pittsylvania County have forwarded a plan to increase the local sales tax to fund school improvements, but voters will have the final say in November.

The board on Tuesday endorsed 1% sales tax referendum for school capital costs like renovation and construction. This sales tax increase, which would result in approximately $3.3 million in annual revenue, will be on the ballot in November.

The school board has identified about $45 million in improvements that need to be made to county schools. The plan would increase the county’s sales tax to 6.3% and raise about $3 million annually.

School leaders say the county’s aging buildings are in need of major repairs that require an infusion of new revenue.
