DANVILLE, Va. – Three Danville Community College students have won a national competition, beating 23 other teams of machinists from across the country in a Youtube match-up dubbed “Clash of the Trades.”
The Danville team — Koby Carter, Trent Oswald and Chase Smith – beat out more than 100 individual competitors from eight states in a national Department of Defense-funded contest, earning more than $30,000 dollars for their school along the way.
The four finalist teams were each given 16 hours to construct a trophy from scratch, from designing a prototype on computers to actually welding the finished product. The teams went into the competition knowing they would need to construct a welded stand and neck, but were given the surprise challenge of building an engraved sphere to top the creation.
Carter, Oswald and Smith won the grand prize for their trophy and were named Project MFG National Champions for their efforts.
For their national challenge win, Danville Community College is awarded $35,000: a $20k scholarship for the school and $5k in prizes for each of the three students.
