DANVILLE, Va. – An elderly Danville man has died from injuries suffered in a house fire at his Schoolfield home.
The Danville Fire Department reports that Ronald W. Hazelwood died Friday afternoon at the University of North Carolina Burn Center.
The Danville Fire Department arrived at 49 Fairfield Avenue on Thursday morning to find fire and smoke showing from the front window of the house. A second alarm was initiated after crews learned that someone was trapped inside the house.
A neighbor had tried unsuccessfully to rescue Hazlewood from the burning home but was beaten back by the smoke and flames. A search and rescue operation was mounted and Hazlewood was located and removed from the home.
Hazlewood was transported by the Danville Life Saving Crew to the Danville hospital and later transferred to UNC Chapel Hill, where he died.
