ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. – Rockingham County investigators have released the names of the two motorcyclists who were murdered last month.
24-year-old Kwandre’ Marcell Carey of Montross, Virginia was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting, which happened May 24 on the U.S. 29 bypass near Reidsville. Later that evening, Haneefa Fitzgerald, 42, of Fredericksburg died after being transported to Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
The sheriff’s office is not releasing the name of the surviving victim “due to safety concerns.” That person suffered serious injuries in the incident.
Investigators have not established a motive but say this was a targeted shooting, not a random act.
Martin Calvin Cox Jr., of Browns Summit, is in custody in Rockingham County following his arrest near Louisville, Kentucky. He faces two counts of first-degree murder.
Cox is said to have shot the three victims from his pickup truck after following the motorcyclists from a gas station in Reidsville.
