SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – A South Boston man faces attempted murder charges after police say he pointed a gun at two Verizon employees and pulled the trigger twice. The pistol failed to fire and no one was injured.
40-year-old Elroy Bates, Jr. fled the scene in his pickup truck was arrested after police spotted the vehicle outside a home in South Boston.
The incident happened at the Verizon Wireless store on Halifax Road at around 6 p.m. Friday. Witnesses say Bates entered the store, pointed a handgun at two employees and squeezed the trigger twice.
Bates was arrested at a home on Edmunds Street and was jailed without bond.
He is charged with two counts of attempted murder and also faces firearms offenses. Police searched the truck and recovered a gun.
Investigators believe the attempted shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute.
