(Danville, Va.) — The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a winter weather advisory for Danville and the surrounding area that will take effect tonight at midnight and will continue until midnight Monday night. The advisory means periods of snow will cause travel difficulties. Travelers should be prepared for snow-covered streets and limited visibilities.

Rain, sleet and snow are expected before 11 a.m. Monday, and then rain and snow in the afternoon. A light accumulation is expected locally, although the National Weather Service says totals will vary.

The high on Monday will be around 36 degrees.

Public Works crews are monitoring the situation. Plows and sand trucks are ready to go as needed. Crews will not, however, pretreat major thoroughfares and bridges with brine because rain will precede the arrival of the storm system. The rain would wash away the brine from the street and bridge surfaces.

Danville Utilities is monitoring the situation. Crews are prepared for around-the-clock operations if power outages occur.
