DANVILLE, Va. – A Danville man is behind bars in North Carolina after authorities say he tried to buy a Tesla with fake cash before stealing it and leading police on a chase.
Deputies responded to the US-29 bypass near High Point around 9 p.m. Wednesday after they received a report that a man tried to purchase a 2018 black Tesla Model 3 with counterfeit money.
The vehicle was stolen and was traveling on US 29 from Guilford County into Rockingham County before police lost sight of it. The car was then spotted speeding and going north on US 29 near the Freeway Drive offramp and got off onto Mayfield Road in Ruffin where the driver crashed the Tesla into a guardrail.
26-year-old Cortavious “Rey-Ray” Johnson got out of the car and jumped off of the Mayfield off ramp bridge onto the US 29 bypass below. He suffered minor injuries but refused medical treatment.
Johnson was charged with resisting arrest, obstruct and delay, larceny of a motor vehicle, obtaining property by false pretense, uttering a forged instrument and possession of counterfeit currency. More charges could be pending.
Johnson is in the Rockingham County Detention Facility, where he is being held under a $105,000 secured bond.
