DANVILLE, Va (Danville Register and Bee) — A Danville man who reportedly strangled his baby because the boy wouldn’t stop crying has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
The Danville Register and Bee reports 23-year-old Kanyon Wade Guthrie was sentenced in Danville Circuit Court Monday after entering a guilty plea in the same courtroom in July.
The 8-month-old infant was taken by ambulance to Sovah Health-Danville on June 12, 2020, after family members found him unresponsive in his crib at their Church Street home. The child was dead on arrival. Hospital staff notified police and the medical examiner determined that death was caused by strangulation.
Guthrie was sentenced to a total of 30 years for the homicide and child endangerment convictions. Half of the sentence was suspended. He must complete active supervised probation and be on good behavior for more than 23 years upon his release from jail.
Guthrie faced a possible sentence of 50 years in prison.
