BLACKSBURG, Va. – A former Virginia Tech football player was indicted Tuesday on a murder charge.

Isimemen Etute now faces a second-degree murder charge in the May 31 death of 40-year-old Jerry Smith.

Police said that during their investigation they determined that Smith had posed as a woman named “Angie” on Tinder and matched with Etute on April 10.

While at Smith’s apartment, Etute discovered Smith was a man who had been posing as “Angie.” Etute is alleged to have assaulted Smith, striking him in the face and leaving the apartment without calling 911.

Etute’s next court appearance is set for Nov. 18.
