DANVILLE, Va. – While Glenn Youngkin attracted a large crowd during a stop at Danville’s Community Market earlier this week, the turnout was sparse for a mid-day appearance by Terry McAuliffe.
The Democratic gubernatorial candidate spoke to a handful of supporters at Bibleway Cathedral on Industrial Avenue Wednesday, concentrating on his plans for education in Virginia.
McAuliffe was joined by Rhett Deitz, a candidate for the House of Delegates. The two spoke to about 30 supporters, with McAuliffe promising to increase teacher pay as governor. McAuliffe said Virginia is dead last when it comes to teacher salaries and the deficit is causing educators to head to neighboring states that pay more.
Youngkin was in Danville Tuesday night and repeated his pledge to eliminate the grocery tax and double the standard tax deduction. He said that will save the average taxpayer about $1,500 a year.
McAuliffe and Youngkin have spent millions of dollars on the campaign and are locked in a tight race. The election is Tuesday.
