(Littleton, N.C.) — Officials in North Carolina say two men have been arrested after a Sunday school teacher was killed and her pastor husband severely injured in a home invasion robbery ended with a house fire.
Warren County District Attorney Mike Waters told reporters Wednesday that Kevin Munn and Lester Kearney are charged with first-degree murder.
Nancy Alford died as the house was ablaze while John Alford suffered lung and skin injuries but managed to escape the burning residence. The couple had been assaulted by two masked intruders who broke into their Mulberry Court home. One of the intruders drove Mrs. Alford to a Roanoke Rapids credit union and forced her to withdraw $1,000 from an ATM, while the second intruder stayed in the home with Mr. Alford. He was beaten and tied up but managed to get out of the house as it was on fire. Mrs. Alford didn’t make it out.
Nancy Alford taught the adult Sunday school class at Sanford Memorial Baptist Church in Brodnax, Virginia. John Alford was pastor there for 10 years and is known for his work with the Concord Baptist Asssociation.
