DANVILLE, Va. – Southside Virginia – including Danville and Pittsylvania County – is now in the midst of a severe drought. And it doesn’t sound like the region will get any relief, at least not anytime soon.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Blacksburg says 2021 rainfall in Danville is 14 inches below normal as of November 28th, with no measurable precipitation expected in the coming seven-day forecast.

Danville recorded the driest November on record this year, prompting the Danville Fire Department to issue a burn ban until further notice. Pittsylvania County quickly followed suit, along with Halifax, Henry and Charlotte Counties. The burn ban prohibits any open burning or outdoor burning in these cities and counties.

The NWS says that some areas of Southside Virginia — specifically, Halifax, Charlotte, Pittsylvania, and Mecklenberg counties, as well as the city of Danville — are experiencing severe drought conditions, while other regions of the state are reporting moderate drought conditions.
