(Halifax County, VA) – An arrest has been made in a shooting that occurred on July 6th that left a three-year-old boy dead. Jakye Shariq Dabbs 22, was arrest by the Virginia State Police Friday and faces charges of one felony count of involuntary manslaughter, one felony count of child abuse/neglect and one misdemeanor count of failure to secure a loaded weapon so as to endanger the life of a child under 14 years of age.
According to a statement by the Virginia State Police, back in July Town of Halifax police responded to a shooting in the 5100 block of Halifax Road. Upon arrival crews found Dalyn Womack 3, boy suffering from a single gun shot wound. He was transported to Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital where he later succumbed to his injury. A medical examiners report determined the wound to have been self-inflicted.
Dabbs who was the child’s uncle owned the handgun that was used in the incident. Womack’s mother said it was an accident and that Dabbs had been a male role model for both her son’s. He is being held in the Halifax County Adult Detention Center. The Virginia State Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
