(Martinsville, VA) – Authorities in Martinsville responded to a call of a structure fire just before 8pm Saturday night.  The home was located on Barton Street and when crews arrived, they discovered flames coming from an upstairs bedroom as well as the attic.

While firefighters were clearing the home, they found one individual dead in the room where the fire is believed to have started.  According to the Martinsville Fire Department the victim died from the fire not a prior cause.  The victim was transported to the medical examiners office for identification and an official cause of death.

The Fire Marshall’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.  Fire Chief Ted Anderson asked the community to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers as they cope with this tragic event.
