HENRY COUNTY, Va. – Two inmates face charges after a Martinsville woman was found dead in her jail cell, apparently of a drug overdose.

Elizabeth Roxanne Mickles, 32, was found in her cell suffering from a medical emergency just after 5:30 Saturday morning. Life-saving efforts were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Mickles was seen walking to her bunk to lie down about four hours earlier and appeared to be fine.

During the course of the investigation, deputies learned that 25-year-old Rebecca Lynn Stacey of Spencer was aware that Mickles became unresponsive after taking a narcotic. Investigators say she did not tell jail staff and prevented other inmates from getting medical help for Mickles. Stacey also concealed Mickles’ condition from deputies as they made their rounds during the night.

She faces a charge of involuntary manslaughter and is being held in the Henry County Jail.

34-year-old Crystal Ann Grimsley of Bassett was booked into the Henry County Jail on Thursday. Investigators say she used a body cavity to conceal a small quantity of drugs. She has been charged with the willful delivery of a controlled substance to a prisoner.

Grimsley is being held without bond in the Henry County Jail.

Mickles’ body has been sent to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.
