(Wise County, Va.) – Virginia State Police have identified the man who was shot and killed after pointing a shotgun at a sheriff’s deputy in Wise County.

Police say 34-year-old Nathan Castle of Duffield, Va. died after being shot by a Wise County Sheriff’s deputy. Investigators say the deputy shot Castle after he exited his pickup truck armed with a shotgun.

The incident started just after 6 p.m. Monday, when the sheriff’s deputy observed Castle driving a pickup truck erratically on Old Route 610. Police say the deputy then tried to engage in a traffic stop but Castle refused to stop and sped away.

Castle then stopped in a travel lane southbound on the Route 23 entrance ramp and got out of the truck holding a shotgun. The Wise County deputy then fired a shot at Castle, killing him.

Virginia State Police have been asked to investigate the incident.
