FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – A Franklin County judge has found a former Marine not-guilty by reason of insanity in the fatal shooting of his step-father.

The ruling came at the conclusion of a bench trial for Michael Brown, the man who led local, state and federal authorities on a ten-day manhunt after Rodney Brown body was found in 2019.

The ruling followed the testimony of several psychiatrists who determined that the younger Brown suffered from dissociative amnesia.

Michael Brown was arrested without incident on Nov. 27, 2019, and charged with the murder of his mother’s boyfriend and adoptive father, Rodney Brown, on Nov. 9, 2019. Rodney Brown was shot in the head and chest at least six times.

Under a plea agreement, Michael Brown pleaded guilty to breaking and entering with intent of larceny. Judge Stacy Moreau sentenced him to seven years with all of the time suspended.

Brown will continue to undergo psychiatric care and will report back to the court within 45 days.
