Prior to his service as a police officer, Ogilvie served as a U.S. Marine. He was on active duty from 2006 until 2010, being honorably discharged and then re-enlisting in reserve duty from 2011 to 2016.
Before joining the Covington Police Department, Ogilvie also served as an EMT for the city of Roanoke. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, along with two children from a previous marriage.
On Monday afternoon, Toney Poulston Jr., 42, of Covington went to the store where a relative, Randall Paxton, 64, worked, confronting and ultimately shooting Paxton, Virginia State Police said in a news release.
When Covington Police officers and Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived, Poulston was coming out of the store armed with a pistol and shots were fired, police said. Poulston and Officer Ogilvie were killed.
Ogilvie is the first Covington Police Officer to die in the line of duty.
A female employee was not injured. Both the woman and Paxton were employees of the business, were married to one another and related to Poulston.
All three bodies have been taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke for examination and autopsy.
A GoFundMe page has been established to assist the officer’s family.
