Emergency repairs will now be performed on a U.S. 58 bridge in Pittsylvania County after a tractor-trailer crash last week damaged the bridge that carries traffic over Sandy Creek. The big rig was eastbound when it ran off the the road, hit a guardrail and then slammed into the bridge… after which it crossed the westbound travel lanes and hit a tree. The driver of the truck wasn’t hurt, but State police have charged him with failure to maintain lane. The Virginia Department of Transportation has installed a temporary traffic barrier, restricting traffic now to just the right lane. Emergency repairs will address the railing as inspectors say the decking of the bridge was not damaged.
