The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors passes a resolution to rename the bridge crossing U.S. 29 in Chatham as the “Deputy Sheriff J. Holland Thomas, Sr. Memorial Bridge.” In 1952, Deputy Holland was attempting to arrest a man when he shot. He underwent several surgeries to have the pellets removed but one that remained caused a fatal infection 4 years later. The resolution will go before the Commonwealth Transportation Board which has the authority to rename bridges and other transportation infrastructure.
