Two bridges in Pittsylvania County have new names honoring fallen members of the Virginia State Police. The ceremonies attended by local officials, community leaders along with representatives of the troopers’ families, and the Virginia State Police were on hand to honor Trooper Henry Murray Brooks, Jr. and Trooper Henry Noel Harmon. The bridge honoring Brooks is in Hurt along U.S. 29 North while the Harmon bridge is on route 57 east of Chatham. Trooper Brooks was stationed in Gretna in 1956 and while working a car crash scene he and several others were struck by a carBrooks died as a result of his injuries. Trooper Harmon was shot while attempting to make an arrest back in 1960 that caused him to be paralyzedHe passed away in 1995 because of the injury. Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors Chair Vic Ingram said during the events, “These two State Troopers gave their lives serving and protecting the residents of Pittsylvania County, so it makes sense that we honor them with these markers that our residents will see frequently.”
