George Washington High School Alum Johnny Newman went all the way, the Danville native is known as the first NBA player to come from the city. Newman was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1986 NBA Draft after starring at the University of Richmond.
Newman would go on to play 16 seasons in the NBA for the Cavaliers, New York Knicks, Charlotte Hornets, New Jersey Nets, Milwaukee Bucks, Denver Nuggets, and Dallas Mavericks.
Newman is now giving back to kids in his hometown. Last week he adopted the entire fourth grade at Woodberry Hills Elementary School. Adopting in this sense means that Newman and his wife, Velvet, will be providing supplies and mentoring the students.
