Tonight the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors will vote on an ordinance revision pertaining to residential planning unit developments. The revision would change county codes and allow high density.

The board of supervisors will also vote on a nearly 580 acre multi-use development in the Tunstall district that would include housing, a grocery store, and a day care.

Many residents in the Tunstall district have spoken against the proposed development at previous meetings, including Jane Kendrick of the Axton Community Group.

“We welcome housing in a moderate size and we welcome working with the developers,” said Kendrick. “As we improve the county we should always be very aware of the people who already live here, we are the people who have kind of been left out and we have heard repeatedly this is what’s good for the county, this is what’s good for the future, this is what’s good for people coming in, this is what people coming in want, well now you have heard a little bit of what we would like to see and we would like to see our way of life retained.”

Tunstall district supervisor Vic Ingram spoke on Facebook live last night about why he plans to support the project and how the Berry Hill Mega Site factors in.

“And how can I say I support economic development and then speak out against a housing project that would provide much needed housing for not only our citizens that choose to go to work there or maybe our children that leave college that come back to go to work there? I can’t do that. I cannot support one and deny another,” said Ingram.

The meeting will take place at 7 tonight at the Board Meeting Room at 39 Bank Street in Chatham.
