A local veteran recently embarked on a unique journey across the country to raise money for charity. Horsepasture native, Luke Oakley recently traveled from Myrtle Beach to Los Angeles on an electric unicycle and raised nearly $6,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project.
The trip started as a personal journey for Oakley, until he decided to make the trip mean more.
“I’m an Air Force veteran myself and I was fortunate enough to never be deployed, but many others who raised their right hand and took the same oath that I did may not have been as fortunate and had to make more sacrifices. So to be able to help them out in any way that I could was something that I really strived to do,” said Oakley.
In total the trip lasted 51 days and covered over 3,200 miles. During the trip Oakley stayed with 24 military families that also cooked for him and made donations as well.
The Wounded Warrior Project improves the lives of veterans in a number of ways including mental health, career counseling, and more. Click the link below to view a short video of Oakley’s trip.
