Early voting for the November general election is underway and the Pittsylvania County Electoral Board has made some changes to increase access for all County voters this fall.
Early voting can still be conducted in the Pittsylvania County Election and Training Center at 18 Depot Street, but an entrance has been opened on the right side and to the rear of the building that provides single level access to those who may experience mobility issues.
This entrance is located steps away from the handicap and authorized parking on the side of the building on Route 1440. Those wanting to use this entrance will see several “Vote Here” signs decorated with balloons for easy visibility. A ballot drop box is located at this entrance and ballots can be dropped off without a voter needing to leave his or her car. A Pittsylvania County parking lot is also available slightly south and to the right of the rear of the Elections and Training Center.
For those wanting curbside service, a sign is posted on the side of the building and next to the handicap parking spaces that provides the number to call to access that service at that location. The number for curbside service at the Elections and Training Center is 434-432-7971.
In this way, voters do not have to leave their car if mobility is an issue.
“This was a logical move, and it did not cost the taxpayers any money. By moving early voting into the Training Center, it also allows more accessibility, safety and convenience for voters to cast their ballots,” said Shani Shorter, Pittsylvania County General Registrar.
After performing the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) review of the Elections and Training Center, it was determined that the Training Center, where early voting is being held this year, is the only space in the building that is totally compliant with all of the ADA standards and provides the safest route for all voters to be able to vote during the early voting period, said David S. Law, Vice-Chairman, Pittsylvania County Electoral Board.
Voters can still enter the building and access the early voting location from the front of the Elections and Training Center on Depot Street, if desired. A ballot drop box is also located in the lobby and next to the entrance.
The last day to cast an in-person early ballot is Saturday, November 4. Early voting is also available on Saturday, October 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
