The Danville Public Works Department crews will pretreat the major thoroughfares, bridges, and overpasses starting this evening because of a winter storm system that is forecast to bring snow to the city on Monday.

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg this afternoon issued a winter weather advisory, which means slippery road conditions will develop. The snow will begin falling between 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. Monday and continue through the day, possibly changing over to a mix of rain and snow during the afternoon before ending as snow Monday night or Tuesday morning.

For Danville, a snow accumulation of one inch is expected, with accumulations of up to three inches north and west of the city.

Any accumulation of snow on streets will be slow to develop because of warm surface level temperatures from today. The high for today reached the low 50s.

Brine, a mixture of water and salt, will be used to pretreat the major thoroughfares, bridges, and overpasses. The water in the brine evaporates, leaving the salt behind on the road. The salt keeps snow and sleet from bonding on the road surface, and it helps to prevent ice from forming.

Residential streets are not pretreated.

Public Works crews will be on duty Monday, monitoring street conditions and spreading sand and salt in areas as needed.

Danville Utilities crews will be on standby. Customers are encouraged to review the Danville Utilities’ storm preparation guide: https://danvilleutilities.com/attachments/2021_Danville-Utilities_Storm-Preparation-Guide_INT.pdf

If any resident or visitor needs shelter, then they should call the City of Danville non-emergency number, which is 434-799-5111, option 8. Arrangements for shelter will be made.
