Galileo’ s Carol-Anne Garrett became the first high school female in Danville-Pittsylvania County to ever run a sub 5-minute mile Thursday night as she took home first place at Galileo Magnet High School’ s home track meet at the newly renovated track facility on the campus of George Washington High School.

With the boys and girls 1600 meter participants competing together, Garrett paced alongside the boys with lap splits of 1:13, 1:16, 1:16, and 1:14 respectively to finish the race with an official time of 4:59.34. The previous best 1600 meter time by an area high school female was set by Tunstall alumnus Emily Wallace when she won the VHSL 3A State Championship as a junior in 2018 with her finishing time of 5:17.
